Reduce MTCT rates to <5% by 2015

What the program does

  • 1. Strengthen the existing policy and structure to support PMTCT in the country

    • To disseminate the NASCOP PMTCT business plan
    • Print revised PMTCT curriculum, PMTCT guidelines and Job aids
    • Dissemination of the revised PMTCT curriculum, PMTCT guidelines and Job aids
    • Print new Mother-baby booklets, HIV exposed infant (HEI) cards and EID algorithm)
    • Revise and print registers (ANC, Maternity, Postnatal, ARV logistic tools, HEI Registers)
    • Disseminate PMTCT registers (ANC, Maternity, Postnatal)
    • Disseminate HEI registers, mother-baby booklets and cards, EID algorithm
    • Print decentralization and RH/HIV integration and guidelines
    • Disseminate decentralization and HIV/RH materials
    • ARV commodities support: Disseminate ARV logistic tools, Commodity management refresher courses for pharmacists and MCH and Maternity in-charges
    • Develop, print and disseminate community PMTCT orientation package and IEC materials
    • Print and disseminate couple counseling in PMTCT manual

     

  • 2. Strengthen delivery of PMTCT services nationally

    • TOT capacity building (New guidelines sensitization, IMAI, EID)
    • Service providers' capacity building in PMTCT.
    • Mentorship in PMTCT and EID

     

  • 3. Strengthen coordination and collaboration of PMTCT program

    • Support PCR lab set-ups in PGHs, CD4 in central PMTCT sites, Rapid Hb estimation kit piloting
    • Quarterly PMTCT TWG meetings (Every 3 months)
    • Hold one National PMTCT Implementers meeting
    • Hold regional PMTCT stakeholders meeting in each of the 10 regions

     

  • 4. Strengthen PMTCT integration and linkages 

    • Print and disseminate RH/HIV integration guidelines
    • EID support
    • Support DBS courier
    • Support PMTCT/RH integration model centers
    • Support Cx Cancer screening among post partum HIV positive women in MCH
    • Public-Private Partnerships (PPP): Capacity building for Private sector HCW in PMTCT packages and M&E tools
    • Community engagement: MTCT free zones: Messages focusing on the 4 prongs of PMTCT.

     

  • 5. Strengthen monitoring, evaluation and supervision

    • HIVQUAL
    • Support LAB QA in PMTCT

    • Support to PASCOs and DHMT

     

  • 6. NASCOP PMTCT staff capacity building and development
    1. Domestic : Support officers to attend Annual General Meetings (AGM) for Kenya medical Association (KMA), Kenya Pediatrics Association (KPA) MANDKenya Clinical Officers Association (KCOA).

      BCC Communication strategy dubbed ‘kata Shauri':
      In response to a formative research that showed poor knowledge of PMTCT across the country, the PMTCT program embarked on a mission to increase awareness amongst people of Kenya, to inform them on what PMTCT is so as to increase behaviour change in the country. This communication strategy is dubbed Kata Shauri. Various advertisements are running on TV and radio to disseminate messages of how mothers who are infected can prevent transmitting HIV to their unborn child.
